Chizu Yoshii is a Japanese translator of English-language fiction, memoirs, and social nonfiction. She graduated from the Department of English Studies at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies. Her translation of Nadia Murad’s “The Last Girl” follows a Yazidi woman’s abduction by Islamic State, escape, and decision to speak publicly about the violence inflicted on her community. In Anna Sherman’s “The Bells of Old Tokyo,” Yoshii translated a journey through the sites of Edo’s timekeeping bells. The book combines encounters with people and places with reflections on urban change, war, and historical memory. She also translated Tracey Lien’s “All That’s Left Unsaid,” a novel about a Vietnamese Australian woman investigating her younger brother’s death. The inquiry exposes the silences surrounding a family and its community. These translations addressed migration, discrimination, and violence through personal memories and testimony.
