Takashi Yoshida (born 1970) is a Japanese microbiologist and professor at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Agriculture. Born in Kobe, he holds a doctorate in agricultural science and specializes in aquatic microbiology and virology. His research examines interactions between aquatic microorganisms and the viruses that infect them, including their roles in algal blooms and the cycling of matter through ecosystems. His forthcoming book “Sekai wa Uirusu de Dekite Iru: Chikyu Seimei no ‘Shihaisha’” (scheduled for publication in October 2026) explores how viruses shape life and the environment, focusing on bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. Through changes in microbial populations caused by viral infection, he investigates how microscopic processes influence the workings of ecosystems.
