Michiyo Yoshida is a Japanese translator working in both directions between English and Japanese, with a substantial body of work in physics, mathematics, and the history of science. Born in Kyoto, she studied physics at Kyoto University and worked for a technology company before entering translation. Her Japanese translation of George Dyson’s “Turing’s Cathedral” received the forty-ninth Japan Translation and Publishing Culture Award. Dyson’s history places the emergence of electronic computing within the work of mathematicians and engineers, wartime research, and nuclear weapons development. Yoshida also translated Randall Munroe’s “What If?,” which uses scientific reasoning and calculations to investigate improbable hypothetical questions. In 2026 she translated Jacques Hadamard’s “The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field” anew. Drawing on mathematicians’ accounts of their own work, the classic study examined preparation, unconscious processes, and sudden insight in mathematical discovery.
