Harumi Yoshida (born 1956) is a Japanese translator of French books on history, culture, and natural science. A graduate of the Department of History in Sophia University’s Faculty of Humanities, Yoshida has translated studies of medieval European life, sexuality, food culture, religion, and Nazism, alongside books that use photographs, maps, and scientific data to explain nature and society. The Japanese translation of Christian Ingrao’s Believe and Destroy: Intellectuals in the SS War Machine appeared in 2012 as Nachisu no Chishikijin Butai. Ingrao examined approximately eighty highly educated men who joined Nazi security institutions and the SS and became involved in mass murder. The study considered their academic backgrounds, personal networks, experiences of the First World War, and the relationship between ideological commitment and violence. Yoshida’s work in natural science included Christian Sardet’s book, published in Japanese in 2014 as Utsukushii Plankton no Sekai and in English as Plankton: Wonders of the Drifting World. Combining detailed photography with biological research, it described drifting marine organisms, their forms and ecology, the origins and evolution of life, and their place in ocean food webs. In 2024 Yoshida translated Ludovic Orlando’s genetic history of horses as Uma no Kagaku to Sekai no Rekishi; its English edition was titled Horses: A 4,000-Year Genetic Journey Across the World. Drawing on ancient DNA, the book traced the origins of domestic horses and their relationships with people. It examined warhorses, agricultural horses, and thoroughbreds through the intertwined histories of ancestry, human movement, warfare, and selective breeding.
