Fukiko Yoshida is a Japanese folklorist who studies mountain worship and traditional narratives. She teaches folklore as a part-time lecturer at Seinan Gakuin University. In “Sefurisan Shinko no Genryu,” she examines shrine and temple histories, festivals, and stories associated with Mount Sefuri on the border of Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. She considers how beliefs differed on the mountain’s northern and southern sides and how its traditions spread to other parts of Japan. “Dobutsu no Minzokugaku” explores the place of animals in everyday life and folklore through examples including foxes associated with Inari worship, dogs taken on pilgrimages to Ise, and the beckoning cat.
