Nagaharu Yodogawa (1909–1998) was a Japanese film commentator and critic who introduced cinema through magazine editing, books, television, and radio. Born in Kobe, he became an enthusiastic cinemagoer in childhood. In 1932 he joined the publicity department of United Artists’ Osaka office. After working in film promotion, he joined the magazine “Eiga no Tomo” in 1947 and became its editor the following year. He began presenting the television film programme “Doyo Yoga Gekijo,” later “Nichiyo Yoga Gekijo,” in 1966, becoming widely recognised for his distinctive delivery and repeated farewell, “Sayonara.” His autobiography, “Yodogawa Nagaharu Jiden,” recalled his childhood in Kobe and his work in film companies, connecting personal experience with cinema’s transition from silent pictures to sound. “Yodogawa Nagaharu Eigajuku” collected lectures delivered over ten years at the Athénée Français Cultural Center, preserving his spoken approach to discussing films. Re-edited after his death, “Yodogawa Nagaharu Eiga Best 100 & Best Ten” brought together a lifetime selection of films with annual rankings and commentary, tracing his changing assessments as a critic. He died on November 11, 1998, aged eighty-nine.
