Jonas Olofsson (born 1978) is a psychologist who studies how olfaction interacts with perception, memory and emotion. He received his doctorate in psychology at Umeå University in 2008 and became a docent at Stockholm University in 2009. He conducted research at the Scripps Research Institute, the Karolinska Institute and Northwestern University, and led the Sensory Cognitive Interaction Laboratory at Stockholm University. Combining psychological experiments with measurements of brain activity, his work has examined why odors are difficult to name, how olfactory and memory processes interact, and how smells influence social judgments. He investigated whether declining odor identification could help predict later cognitive change and explored the use of odor-based training and games to engage cognitive abilities. He was a member of the Young Academy of Sweden from 2015 to 2020 and was selected as a Wallenberg Academy Fellow in 2016. The Forgotten Sense: The New Science of Smell, published in Japanese as におい 脳を支配する究極の感覚, approached smelling as an activity of the brain shaped by experience, expectations and culture, rather than simply a matter of nasal sensitivity. Drawing on psychology and neuroscience, it examined odor-evoked memories, food and interpersonal relationships, virus-related smell loss and olfactory training, connecting experimental findings with everyday sensory experience.
