Tamotsu Watanabe (born 1936) is a Japanese theater critic and Kabuki scholar from Tokyo. After graduating from Keio University with a degree in economics, he worked in Toho’s theatrical division and began his career as a critic in 1965 with “Kabuki ni Joyu o.” His criticism ranges from Kabuki to Noh, Bunraku, and modern theater, placing actors’ physical expression and performance styles within their historical settings. He received the Yomiuri Prize for Literature for both “Musume Dojoji” and “Mokuami no Meiji Ishin,” the Japan Art Academy Prize and Imperial Prize in 2017, and was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2024. His representative work, “Onnagata no Unmei,” which received the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists, examines the performances and life of Nakamura Utaemon VI to explain the solitude borne by the male actor who embodies women onstage and the distinctive beauty created through that art.
