Masataka Watanabe (born 1955) is a Japanese science writer and translator specializing in science communication, the history of science, and evolutionary biology. He completed graduate studies in agricultural science at the University of Tokyo. His translations of Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species” and work on earthworms, along with Stephen Jay Gould’s “Wonderful Life,” introduce the relationship between observation, historical evidence, and evolutionary theory. Sean B. Carroll’s “The Making of the Fittest” connects changes in DNA with biological adaptation. In his own Japanese-language books, Watanabe explores examples of symbiosis and evolution and uses literature and cinema as starting points for considering science as a human activity.
