Masako Watanabe (1929–2026) was a Japanese manga artist from Tokyo and a pioneer of manga for girls. She debuted in 1952 with “Shokoshi” and moved from rental-library manga into girls’ magazines. Her “Garasu no Shiro,” a melodrama about two girls whose fortunes diverge over a secret of birth, follows Isadora and Marisa from London’s backstreets into a struggle involving aristocratic identity, wealth, jealousy, and deception. The series won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1971. In “Seinto Rozarindo,” she turned to horror through an apparently angelic eight-year-old whose innocence coexists with murderous cruelty, and the anguish of a father who discovers his daughter’s secret. Watanabe expanded from elaborately dressed heroines and European settings into horror, suspense, and manga for adult women, exploring obsession and malice within intimate relationships. She received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the Japan Cartoonists Association Awards for her collected work in 2002. In 2006, she became the first female manga artist awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
