略歴(Biography)

渡邊 重夫(わたなべ しげお、1943–) 図書館情報学者。藤女子大学教授を経て、北海道教育大学や北海学園大学などで教鞭を執り、学校図書館と図書館の自由、子どもの学習権・知る権利を中心に研究を重ねてきた。学校図書館を読書活動の場にとどまらず、子どもが主体的に学び、批判的思考力を育む教育の基盤として位置づけ、その役割を一貫して提唱している。1990年に日本図書館学会賞、2019年に学校図書館賞を受賞。代表作『批判的思考力を育てる学校図書館』は、情報社会における学校図書館の意義と役割を論じた代表的な著作である。

Shigeo Watanabe (born 1943) is a Japanese library and information scientist. After serving as Professor at Fuji Women's University, he taught at Hokkaido University of Education and other institutions, specializing in school libraries, intellectual freedom, and children's rights to learn and access information. His work has consistently argued that school libraries should serve not only as places for reading but also as foundations for inquiry-based learning and the development of critical thinking. He received the Japan Society of Library Science Award in 1990 and the School Library Award in 2019. His best-known book is "Critical Thinking through School Libraries," which examines the role of school libraries in the information age.
