楳図 かずお（umezu kazuo）- 漫画家

楳図かずお（うめず かずお、1936年–2024年）は、日本の漫画家。1955年に貸本漫画『森の兄妹』でデビューし、『へび少女』などによって恐怖漫画の分野を切り開いた。その一方で、ギャグ漫画『まことちゃん』やSF作品も手がけ、恐怖と笑い、文明批評を強烈な絵と展開で表現した。『漂流教室』をはじめとする一連の作品で第20回小学館漫画賞を受賞し、2023年には手塚治虫文化賞特別賞を受賞。代表作『漂流教室』では、学校ごと荒廃した未来へ飛ばされた子どもたちが、食料不足や怪物、大人たちの混乱に直面しながら生き延びようとする姿を通して、環境破壊と文明の行方を描いた。

Kazuo Umezz (1936–2024) was a Japanese manga artist. He made his professional debut in 1955 with Mori no Kyodai and helped establish horror manga through works such as Hebi Shojo. He also created comedy and science-fiction manga, combining grotesque imagery, humor, and criticism of modern civilization in a highly distinctive visual style. He received the 20th Shogakukan Manga Award for a body of work led by Hyoryu Kyoshitsu and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Special Award in 2023. In his representative work Hyoryu Kyoshitsu, published in English as The Drifting Classroom, an entire school is transported to a devastated future, where its students confront hunger, monsters, and the collapse of adult authority while struggling to survive.
