William von Hippel is a social psychologist whose research examines evolutionary psychology, social intelligence, and implicit social cognition. Raised in Alaska, he earned a BA in psychology from Yale University in 1985 and a PhD in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1990. He taught at Ohio State University and the University of New South Wales before working at the University of Queensland from 2006 to 2022. In 2023 he became principal of Research with Impact, working independently and helping companies improve their research. His book “The Social Leap,” translated into Japanese as “Wareware wa Naze Usotsuki de Jishin Kajo de Ohitoyoshi nano ka,” brought his evolutionary account of cooperation and self-deception to a general readership. It follows group living on the savannah, the development of language, and the transition to agriculture to examine how social abilities shaped human survival, behavior, and happiness. The book received the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s Book Prize for the Promotion of Social and Personality Science in 2019. In “The Social Paradox: Autonomy, Connection, and Why We Need Both to Find Happiness,” he explored the tension between the desire for social connection and the desire for independent choice. Tracing changes from hunter-gatherer communities to modern life, it reconsidered politics, religion, urban living, and marriage through these competing needs. The original appeared in 2025, followed in 2026 by Yasushi Shibata’s Japanese translation, “Dareka to Issho ni Itai kedo, Hitori ni Naritai.”
