William Shaw is a British novelist and journalist. Beginning as an assistant editor at the music magazine ZigZag, he covered music and culture for publications including The Observer and The New York Times and published several nonfiction books. His debut novel, “A Song from Dead Lips” (2013), follows Detective Sergeant Breen and rookie policewoman Helen Tozer as they investigate a young woman’s murder near Abbey Road in London in 1968. In “The Birdwatcher,” a police officer devoted to birdwatching becomes involved in his neighbour’s murder investigation and confronts his own past during the Northern Ireland Troubles. “The Trawlerman,” shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger in 2022, follows police detective Alex Cupidi, on leave from work, as she is drawn into a couple’s murder and a major investment fraud in a coastal Kent community. Through crimes rooted in particular places and periods, Shaw explores racism, political violence, and the fractures within communities and individual lives.
