William Quinn is a financial and economic historian and Senior Lecturer in Finance at Queen’s Business School, Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on historical financial bubbles, stock markets, fraud, and market manipulation. In “Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles,” co-authored with John D. Turner, he compares episodes ranging from the Mississippi and South Sea bubbles of the eighteenth century to Japan’s asset bubble, the dot-com boom, and speculation in China, showing how marketability, expanding money and credit, and speculation combine with triggers such as government policy and technological innovation to produce financial bubbles.
