William Durant（ウィリアム・デュラント、1885–1981）は、アメリカの歴史家、哲学者、作家。セント・ピーターズ大学などで学び、哲学教師を経て執筆活動に専念した。妻のAriel Durantとともに、人類文明の歩みを壮大なスケールで描いた全11巻の『The Story of Civilization（文明の物語）』を執筆し、20世紀を代表する歴史書として世界中で広く読まれている。1926年刊行の『The Story of Philosophy』は、哲学を平易に解説した入門書の古典として知られる。1967年刊行の『Rousseau and Revolution』は、『The Story of Civilization』の第10巻にあたり、ジャン＝ジャック・ルソーとフランス革命を描いた大作として、1968年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門を受賞した。1977年には、夫妻で大統領自由勲章を受章している。

William Durant (1885–1981) was an American historian, philosopher, and author. After studying at Saint Peter's University and beginning his career as a philosophy teacher, he devoted himself to writing. Together with his wife, Ariel Durant, he authored the monumental eleven-volume "The Story of Civilization," one of the most influential surveys of world history ever published. His earlier bestseller, "The Story of Philosophy" (1926), introduced generations of readers to the major thinkers of Western philosophy. "Rousseau and Revolution," the tenth volume of "The Story of Civilization," won the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for its sweeping account of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the French Revolution. In 1977, William and Ariel Durant were jointly awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of their lifetime contributions to historical scholarship.
