William J. Broad (born 1951) is an American science journalist. He holds a master’s degree in the history of science from the University of Wisconsin and worked for Science magazine before joining The New York Times. His reporting examines the relationships between science, technology, and society. With colleagues at the newspaper, he shared Pulitzer Prizes in 1986 and 1987 for coverage of the Strategic Defense Initiative and the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Investigating scientific misconduct, “Betrayers of the Truth: Fraud and Deceit in the Halls of Science,” coauthored with Nicholas Wade and published in Japanese as “Haishin no Kagakushatachi,” examines fabrication and plagiarism alongside career pressures, deference to authority, and the limitations of replication. It asks how reliably science’s mechanisms for correcting error work in practice. Scrutinizing an activity he has practiced since 1970, “The Science of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards,” translated into Japanese as “Yoga o Kagaku suru,” draws on historical research, scientific studies, and interviews to assess claims about yoga’s benefits and its potential for injury. Across these subjects, Broad investigates the distance between public expectations, institutional assurances, and the evidence available to support them.
