ウェンディ・S・ウォルターズは、アメリカの詩人、エッセイスト、文化評論家。コロンビア大学芸術大学院でノンフィクション部門を率い、文学、美術、建築、歴史を横断する執筆と研究を行っている。メトロポリタン美術館では、奴隷制と彫刻表現を再検討する展覧会「Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast」の共同企画を務めた。『A Dead White: An Argument Against White Paint』（未邦訳）では、美術、建築、デザイン、工業製品に広く使われる白い塗料を物質と文化的象徴の両面からたどり、「白」が純粋さや中立性と結びつけられてきた背景にある政治、人種観、社会的価値を検証している。同書は2026年全米図書賞ノンフィクション部門のロングリストに選ばれた。
Wendy S. Walters is an American poet, essayist, and cultural critic. She directs the nonfiction concentration at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where her writing and research move across literature, visual art, architecture, and history. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she co-curated “Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast,” an exhibition reconsidering the relationship between sculpture and slavery. In “A Dead White: An Argument Against White Paint,” Walters traces white paint through fine art, architecture, design, and industrial production, examining how the color became associated with purity and neutrality and what its ubiquity reveals about politics, race, and cultural values. The book was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
