『The Benefactors』は2026年のWomen’s Prize for Fictionのロングリストに入った。
Wendy Erskine is a Northern Irish novelist and short-story writer who has combined writing with teaching English and drama at a secondary school in Belfast. Applying to a six-month fiction workshop run by The Stinging Fly prompted her to begin writing sustained short fiction, and her work subsequently appeared in the magazine. Her debut collection, Sweet Home, was published by The Stinging Fly Press in 2018 and won the 2020 Butler Literary Award. Its stories follow people in East Belfast through work, family life, loneliness, and loss. Discussing her continued use of the city as a setting, Erskine rejected the suggestion that people elsewhere necessarily led richer or more complex lives. Dance Move (2022) returned to this world through characters caught between past and present, including a singer asked to perform an old song at a paramilitary event and a woman recalling her youth in a tanning salon on her wedding anniversary. Her first novel, The Benefactors (2025), follows three mothers whose eighteen-year-old sons are accused of sexually assaulting a girl, alongside the family supporting her. Its many voices examine how parental protection intersects with class, money, and power in contemporary Belfast. Erskine was a Seamus Heaney Centre Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast in 2021–22 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2023. The Benefactors was longlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
