Walter Jackson Bate was a scholar of English literature, criticism and biography whose Harvard career extended over half a century. John Keats connected the poet's life with the formation of his work and won the Pulitzer Prize. The Burden of the Past and the English Poet considered the pressure exerted by major predecessors on later writers. Samuel Johnson examined the critic and lexicographer's work alongside his moral thinking and personal difficulties. It won the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award. Bate connected literary history and biography by treating a writer's life as part of the development of creative and critical thought. He died in 1999.
