Walter A. McDougall (born 1946) is an American historian whose research encompasses U.S. diplomatic history, international relations, technology policy, and the history of the Pacific world. After teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the University of Pennsylvania as a professor of history and international relations. In “…the Heavens and the Earth: A Political History of the Space Age,” McDougall compares the American, Soviet, and European space programs, interpreting the space race not simply as a succession of scientific achievements but as the product of political institutions, military strategy, public spending, and industrial policy. The book received the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for History.
