W・C・ライアン（W. C. Ryan）は、アイルランドの小説家。ウィリアム・ライアン名義でも執筆し、1930年代のモスクワを舞台にしたコロレフ大尉シリーズを手がける。専業の執筆活動に入る前は、ロンドンで国際的な銀行の法務に携わり、その後は大学などで創作を教えてきた。代表作『真冬の訪問者』（原題 “The Winter Guest”）は、独立戦争下の1921年のアイルランドを舞台とする歴史ミステリー。第一次世界大戦の帰還兵で、保険会社の損害査定人として働くトムが、かつての恋人モードの死を調べる。彼女はIRAによる警察車両への襲撃で死亡したとされるが、襲撃した側は彼女を殺していないという。戦争の記憶と恋人の幻影に悩まされながら真相を追う同作は、2023年の英国推理作家協会（CWA）ゴールド・ダガー賞の最終候補に選ばれた。政治的な忠誠と個人の秘密が絡み合う社会で、戦争が人々の記憶や信頼関係に残す傷を描いている。
W. C. Ryan is an Irish novelist who also writes as William Ryan, the name associated with his Captain Korolev crime series set in 1930s Moscow. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked in legal roles for multinational banks in London. He has also taught creative writing at universities and other institutions. His historical mystery “The Winter Guest” is set in Ireland in 1921, during the War of Independence. Tom, a First World War veteran working as an insurance assessor, investigates the death of his former lover, Maud. She is believed to have died in an IRA ambush on a police vehicle, but the attackers deny killing her. Haunted by wartime memories and Maud’s ghostly presence, Tom must navigate conflicting loyalties and concealed relationships. Shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger in 2023, the novel explores how political violence and private secrets undermine trust and shape the lives of those who survive war.
