Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was a French poet, novelist, playwright, and politician. One of the leading figures of French Romanticism, he had a profound influence on nineteenth-century European literature. He is internationally renowned for novels such as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Les Misérables, which explore social inequality, poverty, justice, and human dignity through sweeping narratives and memorable characters. Hugo also produced an extensive body of poetry and drama and was actively involved in political and social causes, advocating the abolition of the death penalty, freedom of expression, and social reform.
