Vaseem Khan is a British crime novelist known for mysteries set in India. Born in England, he spent a decade working in India and works at University College London’s Department of Security and Crime Science. He served as Chair of the UK Crime Writers’ Association from 2023 to 2025. His historical mystery “Midnight at Malabar House,” winner of the 2021 CWA Historical Dagger, introduces the fictional Persis Wadia, India’s first female police detective. Set in Bombay at the end of 1949, as the country prepares to become a republic, the novel follows her investigation into the murder of a prominent British diplomat. An emptied safe and a cryptic note provide clues, but the inquiry becomes increasingly entangled in politics. Facing hostility within the police and tensions left by colonial rule, Persis must navigate both the evidence and the prejudices that threaten to obstruct her investigation.
