Una Mannion is an American-born novelist based in Ireland. Born in Philadelphia, she lives in County Sligo and holds a PhD from University College Cork. After many years teaching literature and creative writing in Sligo, she joined Trinity College Dublin in 2024. Her novel “Tell Me What I Am” follows the daughter and sister of Deena Garvey, who disappears in 2004. Deena’s daughter grows up learning to avoid her father’s anger and never ask about her absent mother, while Deena’s sister suspects who is responsible but cannot prove it. Separated by hundreds of miles, the two gradually uncover the secrets shaping their family over fourteen years. The novel won the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger in 2024. Mannion explores how coercion and silence within a family influence a child’s memories and sense of identity, alongside the efforts of women to recover connections that have been taken from them.
