Kiyomi Utan is a Japanese translator working across science, society, history, memoir, and romantic fiction. Her nonfiction translations include both scientific investigations and accounts of individual experience. She translated Lucy Adlington’s “The Dressmakers of Auschwitz,” which reconstructs the work and survival of women compelled to make clothing for Nazi officials’ families within the camp. In Nathan Thrall’s “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama,” she translated a reported account beginning with a school-bus accident and tracing the barriers to movement and rescue confronting a Palestinian father under occupation. She also translated Pieter R. Adriaens and Andreas De Block’s “Of Maybugs and Men,” examining the history and philosophy of scientific research on homosexuality and the interaction of factual claims with value judgments.
