Akiko Usagawa is a translator of English-language fiction into Japanese. After graduating from Rikkyo University and working for a company, she became a translator. Her work spans mysteries, fantasy, and historical fiction, including books by Mary Higgins Clark and David Eddings. In Amor Towles’s “A Gentleman in Moscow,” she translated the story of a Russian aristocrat confined to a hotel after the revolution. His relationships with its staff and guests trace a life lived within restricted surroundings while the society outside changes over several decades. She also translated Graeme Macrae Burnet’s “Case Study,” in which a woman adopts a false identity to investigate a psychiatrist she suspects was involved in her sister’s suicide. Its interplay of notebooks and biographical narrative raises questions about identity and the reliability of storytelling.
