Katsura Umino is a Japanese translator of English-language books on art, history, social welfare, and business. In Camper English’s “Doctors and Distillers,” Umino translated a cultural history tracing relationships between beer, wine, spirits, and medicine through documents and individual lives from antiquity to the present. Umino also translated Mitchell Albala’s “The Landscape Painter’s Workbook,” which uses examples and practical exercises to examine shape, composition, and color in landscape painting. In David Hockney’s “Hockney’s Pictures,” Umino worked on a collection combining the artist’s words with more than six decades of experimentation in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and computer-based image-making. The Japanese edition followed changes in Hockney’s work as he explored relationships between seeing and representing the world.
