Satoru Udagawa (1947–2024) was a Japanese nonfiction writer whose work focused on French society and culture, particularly food and gastronomy. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics. He spent approximately twenty years living in Paris, reporting on chefs, restaurants, wine, and the arts. His account of producing a French restaurant in London, combined with an examination of changing culinary trends, appeared in “Furansu Ryori wa Shinka suru.” He explored the careers of two executive chefs who helped establish French cuisine in postwar Japan—Masakichi Ono of Hotel Okura and Nobuo Murakami of the Imperial Hotel—in “Furansu Ryori Nidai Kyosho Monogatari: Ono Masakichi to Murakami Nobuo.” He was appointed a Chevalier of France’s Order of Agricultural Merit. His reporting also extended beyond food: his visits to the workspaces of writers, poets, actors, and designers formed “Shosai Tanbo,” which examines how they used their studies and the environments in which they created their work.
