鳥山 明（とりやま あきら、1955–2024年）は、日本の漫画家、キャラクターデザイナー。愛知県立起工業高等学校デザイン科卒業。広告関係のデザイン会社勤務を経て、1978年に『週刊少年ジャンプ』掲載の『ワンダー・アイランド』でデビューした。ペンギン村を舞台に、発明家の則巻千兵衛と少女型ロボットのアラレが騒動を巻き起こすギャグ漫画『Dr.スランプ』で小学館漫画賞を受賞。1984～1995年に連載された『DRAGON BALL』では、七つ集めると願いがかなう球を探す旅から、孫悟空と仲間たちの成長、強敵との闘いへと物語を広げた。ゲーム『ドラゴンクエスト』シリーズのキャラクターデザインも手がけ、スライムをはじめとするモンスターや冒険者たちの姿を生み出した。

Akira Toriyama (1955–2024) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He graduated from the design department of Aichi Prefectural Okoshi Technical High School and worked at an advertising design company before making his manga debut in Weekly Shonen Jump with “Wonder Island” in 1978. He won the Shogakukan Manga Award for “Dr. Slump,” a comedy set in Penguin Village, where inventor Senbei Norimaki and his robot girl Arale cause an endless succession of mishaps. Serialized from 1984 to 1995, “Dragon Ball” grew from a quest for seven wish-granting balls into a saga of Son Goku and his companions’ development and battles against increasingly powerful opponents. Toriyama also designed characters for the “Dragon Quest” video game series, creating its distinctive adventurers and monsters, including the Slime.
