Tristan Gooley is a British natural navigator and explorer. He studies how the sun, stars, wind, plants, animals, and other natural signs can reveal direction, weather, and features of the surrounding environment, and he founded a school of natural navigation in 2008. He has crossed the Atlantic solo both by aircraft and sailing boat and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Institute of Navigation. In “How to Read a Tree: Clues and Patterns from Roots to Leaves,” he explains how the forms of branches, bark, leaves, and roots can reveal direction, nearby water, and the conditions in which a tree has grown.
