Tony Tulathimutte (1983–) is a Thai American novelist and short-story writer. Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from Stanford University and earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His story “Scenes from the Life of the Only Girl in Water Shield, Alaska” received an O. Henry Award. His debut novel, “Private Citizens,” follows four Stanford graduates in the San Francisco Bay Area around the time of the financial crisis, examining their careers, relationships, politics, and involvement with technology; the book earned him a Whiting Award in 2017. His interconnected story collection “Rejection” uses dark satire to explore romantic and sexual rejection, loneliness, identity, online culture, and self-deception. It was longlisted for the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction.
