Tom Zoellner is a journalist and nonfiction writer whose work examines resources, transportation, regional life and slavery. He studied at Lawrence University and Dartmouth and earned a doctorate at Arizona State University. He taught at Chapman University and worked as an editor-at-large at the Los Angeles Review of Books. The Heartless Stone followed the diamond trade through reporting on six continents, tracing the relationship between extraction, commerce and desire. Island on Fire investigated the 1831 Jamaican slave rebellion and its place in the abolition of slavery in the British Empire; it won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Road Was Full of Thorns (2025) turned to enslaved people who escaped to Union lines during the American Civil War. Following their journeys and precarious refuge, it examined how their actions changed the course of emancipation.
