Tom Wolfe (1930–2018) was an American journalist and novelist and a leading figure in New Journalism, which brought techniques of fiction into factual reporting. In “The Right Stuff” (『ザ・ライト・スタッフ――七人の宇宙飛行士』), he wrote about America’s early astronauts and test pilots. His novel “The Bonfire of the Vanities” (『虚栄の篝火』) depicts conflicts over wealth and race in 1980s New York.
