トマス・ピンチョン（1937年–）は、アメリカの小説家。ニューヨーク州に生まれ、コーネル大学で英文学を学んだのち、航空機メーカーのボーイングで技術文書の執筆に携わった。1963年に『V.』（V.）で長編小説デビュー。『競売ナンバー49の叫び』（The Crying of Lot 49）、『重力の虹』（Gravity’s Rainbow）、『メイスン＆ディクスン』（Mason & Dixon）など、科学、戦争、資本主義、陰謀、情報による管理を、複雑な物語構成とブラックユーモアを通して描いてきた。第二次世界大戦末期のV2ロケットを中心に据えた『重力の虹』は、1974年全米図書賞を受賞。公の場にほとんど姿を見せないことでも知られ、2025年には12年ぶりの長編『Shadow Ticket』（未邦訳）を刊行した。
Thomas Pynchon (1937–) is an American novelist. Born in New York State, he studied English at Cornell University and later worked as a technical writer for the Boeing aircraft company. He made his debut as a novelist with “V.” in 1963. In works including “The Crying of Lot 49,” “Gravity’s Rainbow,” and “Mason & Dixon,” he has explored science, war, capitalism, conspiracy, and systems of control through complex narrative structures and black humor. “Gravity’s Rainbow,” centered on the development and deployment of the V-2 rocket during the final stages of the Second World War, won the 1974 National Book Award for Fiction. Known for avoiding publicity and rarely appearing in public, Pynchon published “Shadow Ticket” in 2025, his first novel in twelve years.
