Thomas Mullen (born 1974) is an American novelist whose historical and crime fiction explores communities under pressure, racial discrimination, and the relationship between power and information. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he studied English and history at Oberlin College. His debut, “The Last Town on Earth” (2006), is set in a Pacific Northwest mill town that quarantines itself during the influenza epidemic of 1918, against the backdrop of World War I. A soldier’s plea for shelter brings the community’s decision to protect itself into conflict with patriotism and obligations to family and neighbors. The novel won the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for historical fiction in 2007. That year Mullen moved to Decatur, Georgia. Research into local history introduced him to the restrictions imposed on Atlanta’s first Black police officers and provided the starting point for “Darktown” (2016). Set in 1948, it follows Black officers investigating a Black woman’s murder while barred from arresting white suspects or entering police headquarters. Its account of policing under segregation developed into a trilogy. In “The Rumor Game” (2024), Mullen turned to World War II-era Boston, bringing together a reporter who investigates rumors for a newspaper column and an FBI agent pursuing a factory worker’s death. Their intersecting inquiries into Nazi propaganda and murder uncovered a web of espionage, organized crime, and domestic fascism.
