Thomas Gryta is a journalist whose reporting has covered corporate management, industry, and telecommunications. He studied history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and worked as a copy editor and reporter in London before covering biotechnology and pharmaceuticals at Dow Jones. While there, he was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow in business journalism at Columbia University. He later moved to The Wall Street Journal and began covering General Electric and other conglomerates in 2017. With Ted Mann, he wrote Lights Out: Pride, Delusion, and the Fall of General Electric, translated into Japanese as GE帝国盛衰史――「最強企業」だった組織はどこで間違えたのか. Drawing on their corporate reporting, the book traced how an emblematic American company entered a profound crisis. It followed the organization inherited from Jack Welch by successive leaders, examining acquisitions and divestitures, reliance on financial services, accounting practices, and efforts to turn GE into a digital business. The authors investigated the growing distance between the company’s operating reality and the expectations sustained by earnings targets and confidence in its leaders.
