T. C. Boyle (1948–), also known as T. Coraghessan Boyle, is an American novelist and short story writer. Born in Peekskill, New York, he studied creative writing at the University of Iowa and taught for many years at the University of Southern California. His exuberant imagination and dark humor expose human desires, self-delusion, and the contradictions of American society. “World’s End,” which traces intertwined family histories across several centuries in the Hudson River Valley, won the 1988 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. His novels include “The Road to Wellville,” a satire of the pursuit of perfect health, and “East Is East,” about a young Japanese man’s escape to America. Drawing on historical figures and social phenomena, Boyle explores how ideals and convictions turn into obsessions, revealing both their comedy and their cruelty.
