Koji Toko is a Japanese scholar, translator, and critic of contemporary American literature, and a professor at Waseda University. After working as a freelance translator, he pursued further literary study, including graduate work at the University of Southern California. Encounters with writers from varied backgrounds helped shape his interest in migration and the diversity of American writing. He has co-translated Junot Díaz’s “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” and “This Is How You Lose Her,” and translated Don DeLillo’s “Point Omega.” In his Japanese-language book of lectures on Hemingway, he reads beyond familiar images of masculine strength to examine vulnerability and the ethical questions raised by lives under pressure.
