Erika Togo is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction on history, science, and society. In Rowland Ennos’s account of the science of spin, she introduces connections between the movement of planets, wheels and engines, and the mechanics of the human body. Stephen Mansfield’s survey of modern Japanese gardens follows a century of landscape design through photographs and discussion of ideas about nature. Lewis Dartnell’s “Being Human” examines how biological features of the human body have influenced history, while James Crawford’s “The Edge of the Plain” explores the human practice of making borders. Her translations approach civilization through the interactions of natural processes, material conditions, and human decisions.
