Dorothy E. Denning (born 1945) is an American computer scientist and cybersecurity researcher. Her foundational research on secure information flow, lattice-based access control, and anomaly-based intrusion detection helped establish core elements of modern cybersecurity. She is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School and was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2026. Her representative work, "Information Warfare and Security," places computer intrusion, sabotage, industrial espionage, communications interception, psychological operations, and electronic warfare within a common framework, while examining both methods of attack and defenses such as encryption, authentication, and access control.
