Dolen Perkins-Valdez is an American novelist whose fiction explores African American history, particularly the experiences of women. A graduate of Harvard College, she earned her doctorate at George Washington University and teaches creative writing at American University. Her work examines how racial discrimination and institutional power shape intimate relationships, bodily autonomy and the choices available to individuals. Set in Alabama in 1973, her 2022 novel “Take My Hand” follows Civil Townsend, a young Black nurse working at a family-planning clinic in Montgomery. Hoping to help women make decisions about their own lives, Civil visits a household to administer contraceptives and discovers that her patients are sisters aged thirteen and eleven. Her growing attachment to the family brings her professional responsibilities and assumptions about helping others into question. Inspired by an actual forced-sterilization case and the legal battle that followed, the novel considers reproductive freedom, medical authority and the responsibilities of those who witness injustice. It received the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work–Fiction, the 2023 fiction award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, and the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award. Perkins-Valdez approaches historical injustice through the lives of those subjected to it and the moral conflicts of people implicated in its workings.
