チャールズ・ダーウィン（1809年–1882年）は、イギリスの自然科学者。1831年から約5年間、測量船ビーグル号に乗り、南米やガラパゴス諸島などで動植物や化石を観察・採集した。その旅を記した『ビーグル号航海記』（The Voyage of the Beagle）では、各地の生き物や地形だけでなく、南米で見つけた巨大な絶滅動物の化石についても報告している。進化の仕組みを論じた『種の起源』（On the Origin of Species）では、同じ種の個体にも違いがあり、環境に適した性質を持つ個体が子孫を残しやすいという自然選択の考えを示した。さらに『人間の由来』（The Descent of Man）では、その考えを人間にも広げるとともに、動物の色彩や角などの特徴を、配偶相手をめぐる競争や選択から説明しようとした。
Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was a British naturalist. From 1831 to 1836, he travelled aboard HMS Beagle, observing and collecting plants, animals, and fossils in South America, the Galápagos Islands, and elsewhere. In “The Voyage of the Beagle,” his account of the journey, he described the places and creatures he encountered, including fossils of large extinct mammals found in South America. “On the Origin of Species” presented his theory of natural selection: individuals within a species vary, and those with traits suited to their surroundings are more likely to leave offspring. In “The Descent of Man,” he extended his account of evolution to humans and examined how competition for mates could help explain features such as animals’ colours and horns.
