Charles Baxter (1947–) is an American novelist, essayist, poet, and longtime teacher of creative writing. Born in Minneapolis, he has written extensively about desire, loneliness, family tensions, and the instability of ordinary lives. His novel “The Feast of Love,” a finalist for the 2000 National Book Award for Fiction, presents a series of intertwined perspectives on love and human connection. His collection “Gryphon: New and Selected Stories” brings together stories in which humor and unease coexist within complicated relationships. In “The Art of Subtext: Beyond Plot,” Baxter examines the implications, silences, and emotional undercurrents that operate beneath a story’s visible plot.
