Eiichi Chino (1932–2002) was a Japanese linguist and translator of Czech literature. Born in Tokyo, he studied Slavic languages at Charles University in Prague and served as a professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. In “Gaikokugo Jotatsuho,” his guide to learning foreign languages, he drew on his own experience and the insights of accomplished language learners to explain how to choose dictionaries and textbooks and develop vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. “Gengogaku o Manabu” introduces fields such as phonetics, comparative linguistics, and dialectology alongside the scholars who shaped modern linguistics. His Japanese translations include Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” which follows lives unsettled by love, freedom, and exile against the backdrop of the Prague Spring and the Soviet invasion.
