Terry Teachout (1956–2022) was an American theater and music critic, biographer, and playwright. From 2003 until his death, he served as the drama critic of The Wall Street Journal, while also writing for Commentary about theater, jazz, classical music, and dance. In “Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington,” Teachout draws on recordings, correspondence, and interviews to examine Ellington’s composing, management of his orchestra, and carefully constructed public persona. The biography traces the creative partnerships and personal contradictions behind his celebrated career and was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
