Téa Obreht (1985–) is an American novelist born in Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia. She spent parts of her childhood in Cyprus and Egypt before immigrating to the United States at the age of twelve. Her debut novel, “The Tiger’s Wife,” weaves Balkan history and folklore into a young woman’s search for the truth surrounding her grandfather’s death. It won the 2011 Orange Prize for Fiction, making Obreht its youngest-ever recipient, and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her later novels include “Inland,” set in the American West in the late nineteenth century, and “The Morningside,” about an immigrant mother and daughter living in a city transformed by climate change. Her fiction connects memories of war, migration, and lost homelands with myths, ghosts, and the lives of animals.
