T. D. Allman (1944–2024) was an American journalist and historian. Over a career spanning five decades, he reported from more than ninety countries, exposed the CIA’s “secret war” in Laos, and covered conflicts and political upheavals in Cambodia, Beirut, and Tiananmen Square. As a foreign correspondent for Vanity Fair, he also interviewed political leaders including Yasser Arafat, Boris Yeltsin, and Helmut Kohl. In “Finding Florida: The True History of the Sunshine State,” Allman reexamines Florida’s past through the displacement of Indigenous peoples, slavery, racial violence, and land speculation, challenging the myths created by politicians, developers, and the tourism industry. The book was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
