Yasunobu Teshima (born 1983) is a historian of modern and contemporary Japan whose research examines politics, political thought, and public administration. Born in Miyagi Prefecture, he graduated from Tohoku University’s Faculty of Arts and Letters in 2006 and completed its doctoral program in 2011, earning a doctorate in literature. After appointments including a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship and part-time teaching at Tohoku Gakuin University, he taught at Fukui National College of Technology and moved to Ryukoku University’s Faculty of Letters in 2020. His undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses all concerned the Japanese navy. His subsequent research extended from naval involvement in Taisho- and Showa-era politics to political institutions, individual statesmen, and administrative history. “Tosuiken no Dokuritsu” (2024) examined the independence of supreme military command from the Meiji period to Japan’s defeat in 1945, emphasizing the military’s sense of specialized professional expertise. In “Kato Tomosaburo” (2025), he investigated the life of the naval officer and statesman associated with the Washington Naval Treaty through his understanding of public opinion and party politics, his international outlook, and his consideration of civilian appointments as military ministers. Alongside naval history, Teshima studied public-land management and cultural-property protection. Teaching at a college of technology prompted his research into postwar higher education. “Kosen: Sengo Nihon no Engineer Yosei” (2026) traced the college-of-technology system from its establishment in 1962 through institutional expansion, curricular change, and incorporation as an independent administrative institution. It examined how practical engineering education developed between industrial demands and higher-education policy.
