代表作『米海軍で屈指の潜水艦艦長による「最強組織」の作り方』(原題 “Turn the Ship Around!: A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders”)では、サンタフェで実践した改革の過程を紹介する。 『LEADER’S LANGUAGE――言葉遣いこそ最強の武器』(原題 “Leadership Is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say—and What You Don’t”)では、リーダーの言葉がチームの思考や意思決定に与える影響を検討する。
L. David Marquet is an American leadership consultant and retired U.S. Navy captain. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1981 and served in the submarine force. From 1999 to 2001, he commanded the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Santa Fe, introducing changes that enabled crew members to exercise judgment and take responsibility for their actions. Since retiring in 2009, he has drawn on that experience in advising businesses and speaking about leadership. In “Turn the Ship Around!: A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders,” he recounts the reforms he introduced aboard Santa Fe. An incident in which an incorrect command was repeated despite being recognized as wrong prompted him to reconsider how authority operated on the submarine. He describes how delegating control, developing technical competence, and establishing a shared understanding of goals enabled crew members to become decision-makers. Rather than waiting for instructions, they communicated what they intended to do, making their reasoning visible and taking ownership of their decisions. In “Leadership Is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say—and What You Don’t,” he examines how leaders’ words shape a team’s thinking and decision-making. Practical approaches include gathering others’ views before offering one’s own, asking how confident people are in a plan, and enabling anyone who notices a problem to pause the work. He explains how everyday conversations can bring concerns and proposals from the people closest to the work into the decisions that guide an organization.
